Tonykart reigned supreme at Suzuka in Japan for both the Formula KF1 World
Cup, and the Formula KF2 Asia-Pacific title.
In Formula KF1 European Champion Marco Ardigo overcame a brief spat with Davide Fore in the heats, to emerge as a comfortable winner, in a race that he made look quite easy by any standards.
He worked his way forward to take the lead from his Briitish team-mate Gary
Catt, after starting from grid six, before easing away for a 2.3s victory
and the top step of the important World Cup podium to add to his growing CV.
Gary Catt, pole-sitter and early race leader, suggested the World Cup title
was going Tonykart's way, but Catt was surprised when Ardigo caught him, and
then once the Japanese diver Tatsuya Hattori, racing on brand new tyres
caught and passed him, Catt knew he was in for a hard race. Fore pushed
hard in the closing laps, but Catt proved equal to the task for an impressive Tonykart 1-3.
Over in Formula KF2 meanwhile, and after having a bit of a struggle in the
early morning warm-up, 15-year old British ace Will Stevens eventually won
very easily to take the Asia-Pacific title. Only the Italian Giacomo Patrono looked a likely opponent once the race got under way, when the
latter led from ole position, but Stevens proved equal to the task.
Tracking Patrono from second plce Stevens was forced to make his move much
earlier than he had planned. As they swept across the start-finish line and
up into the tightest part of the track at turn 1, Stevens discovered that
Patrono was so slow he had little choice. He swept into a majestic lead and
eased away form his opponent, to win by what could have been a bigger margin
than the 1.8s he held by the finish.
So a Tonykart double podium win in Japan and tru;y deserving they both were too! It was an impressive performance from the Italian kart manufacturer.
