Strawberry Racing gives three lucky drivers chance to race at PFi Worlds
For most young kart racers, the chance to compete in the CIK World Championships is a dream. But, thanks to an initiative created by Super One Series, in association with Strawberry Racing and Andy Cox Racing, five drivers were given the chance to race at the showcase event, held 22-24 September at PFi, in Lincolnshire.
Echoing the prizes in Roald Dahl’s famous book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, there were five Golden Tickets to be won. These were drawn randomly before the end of the Super One Series’ second round at Shenington, with each lucky driver offered the use of a brand Tonykart or Birel ART chassis, Vortex motor, technical assistance and a berth in either the Strawberry or ACR awning. Thus, Strawberry Racing welcomed Alex Eades, Guy Cunnington and James Lingard as their respective Golden Ticket winners. Alex raced in the OK Junior class, with Lingard and Cunnington among the 92 competitors in OK.
All three gave a terrific account of themselves, despite being unfamiliar with their respective classes. Guy fared the best, qualifying for the final alongside former World Champion, Flavio Camponeschi. Sadly, his race ended at the halfway point, following ignition failure.
Strawberry Racing Team Manager, Paul Spencer praised the trio, saying: “They all did really well. Particularly when you consider that they were ‘lad-and-dad’ privateers taking on works drivers, or youngsters competing with established teams that have won World titles before. They all enjoyed a great experience and we certainly enjoyed sharing it with them.”
Also making the transition from domestic racing to the world stage was the newly-crowned MSA British Champion, Mark Kimber. He too stepped up to the challenge admirably, qualifying on the 7th row of the grid for the final. In a race packed with incident – nine drivers were given time penalties for ‘incorrectly installed front fairings’ – he ran in 23rd place before fighting his way past seven karts to take the chequered flag in 17th position.
